Set behind a terraced house in Horseguards, Exeter is a beautiful city courtyard garden achieved with a clever use of space. Included in the small space are multi-stemmed trees planted in raised beds.
The raised beds contain shady plants forming a cool garden which comes to life in late Spring when the white bracts of the Cornus trees start to light up the space. Running alongside the raised beds is a rill that spills water into the small pond giving that beautiful sound of a waterfall.
The paving is split with a wooden decking which provides diagonal interest and contrast across the small space. There is enough room for a large seating table and chairs on the deck and paving and room enough to relax and barbecue on a warm Summer day. The design has cleverly created space and feels open and uncrowded. A wonderful cool garden.
